Department of Physics

Research and Publication of the Department

“Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is to not stop questioning.”
Albert Einstein,Relativity: The Special and the General Theory
Physics Dept image150 years is a milestone in the annals of a department. The Department of Physics of Uluberia College was started in 1963 and it has started blooming along with the institution. Dr. Jayanta Banerjee, founder Head of the Department and he became the principal of this college after few years. In 1973, the department has initiated honours courses in physics under the headship of Prof. Nirmal Chatterji. The Department completes its 50 years of yeomen service during this academic session i.e. 2013-2014. On this glorious transition, the department organizes one-day UGC sponsored seminar in collaboration with Bengal Engineering And Science University (BESU), Shibpur, Howrah.
It has highly qualified and experienced faculty members. It is one of the active departments of the institution. It is commendable that today, most of the faculty in the department have doctoral degree. At present there are 4 full time permanent teachers out of which 2 are Associate Professor (by CAS) and 2 are Assistant Professor in addition to that we have one GLI (Selection Grade). Faculties are working with the aim of keeping its glorious fame. As a special mention, Dr. Chandra Das is seriously engaged in her research activities in addition to her teaching job. She is publishing her research papers every year in reputed national and international journals.
The Alumni of this department are occupying higher echelons of administrative, academic and scientific fields in India and abroad – only to mention, have faculty members in MAX PLANCK Institute, SMART,MIT (CSAIL), BioSym, MIT (UMASS), Harvard Medical School, USA, IACS (Jadavpur), ISI (Kolkata), JU (Jadavpur).

The department provides a very vibrant and dynamic academic ambience with effective tutorial work, discussions and seminars. The department facilitates opportunities for higher studies and placements. The department library is enriched with 100 volumes of books. The intake capacity of degree course (Honours) is 61.
Vision:
The Department of Physics accomplishes to furnish students to compete in and contribute to the varying scientific world advancements both in pure and applied physics. The department motivates the students to become research/scientific workers, so that they become builders of modern society in general and the country at large. It trains the minds of young physicists towards application oriented by providing students with multiple learning opportunities like; Ability based learning, formal courses with integrated laboratory, and colloquium programs.
Objectives:
To explore and extend high standards in teaching pedagogy. A variety of objectives are designed such as,
1. To develop the spirit of enquiry.

2. To assimilate education and research by incorporating recent discoveries, modern techniques into the curriculum.

3. To sustain close working relationships between students and faculty.

4. To encourage inter-disciplinary thinking by providing students with educational  opportunities.

Head of the Department:
Pranab Nath Mallik, M.Sc. (with specialization in Electronics) is Head of the Department of Physics of Uluberia College. He is having a teaching experience of 32 yrs. He plays a very important role in the academic and administrative matter of the college.
No. of  Doctorates completed in the department of physics
1. Dr. Gautam Kumar Mallik, M.Sc. (with specialization in Solid State Physics), Ph.D. area of research “Spectoscopy and Material Science”.
2. Dr. Chandra Das M.Sc. (with specialization in Solid State Physics & Plazma Physics), Ph.D. Area of research “Plasma Physics and Fluid Dynamics ”.
3. Dr. Lina Paria, M.Sc. (with specialization in Nuclear Physics), Ph.D., Area of research  “Nuclear Physics           ”.

Student-Teacher Ratio (programme wise):   50:1 (approx) Honours, 125:1 (approx) General.
Publications per faculty:
Number of papers published in peer review journals:  12 (Dr. Chandra Das), 03 (Dr. Gautam Kumar Mallik), 03 (Dr. Lina Paria) and 01 (Dr. Pranab Nath Mallik)
Activities of the department:
1) Seminars organized:
a) State Level:    Organized U.G.C sponsored State Level Seminar on 17th December 2013 in collaboration with Department of Physics and School of Material Science And Engineering Bengal Engineering And Science University (BESU), Shibpur, Howrah.

1) We have well equipped lab (Electrical, non-electrical, electronics, optics, compute) along with internet facilities.
2) Besides classroom lectures audio visual method is often applied in order to broaden their views by showing video lectures related with their academic topics. Students are often referred to some important educational websites of Indian and foreign universities and reputed institutes like IITs. This internet facility is very much helpful to our beloved students for their further clarification and understanding and extensive exposure to the subject. Students are often supplied with some classic and renowned e-books and relevant lecture notes for further reading. They gradually learn to love  physics. In this way they gradually trained up for higher studies.
3) Organizes Quiz contest, Debate competition, fresher’s welcome, farewell ceremony etc. on regular basis.
4) Assessments through Class Tests and Tutorials are done regularly.
5) Special & remedial coaching classes are taken regularly.
6) Arranges Guardians’ meeting to make the guardians aware of the activities of their progress.
7) The result of our department is quite encouraging. Every year at least four to five students get 1st class in the final University Examination and in recent past, some students secured the university’s topper positions.
8) Every year at most 60% of our students go for post graduate studies. Some of our students have qualified in SSC Exam and are serving in schools. In recent past, some students are doing their doctoral research work in reputed research institutes in Kolkata and post doctoral research work in USA and one joined as faculty member in Jadavpur university in 2013.  Some students are doing other jobs and some of them are self-entrepreneur.

9) Feedback mechanism is maintained in every academic session.

10) In the beginning of the academic session, academic calendar is distributed to the 1st year students.

The strength of the department lies in its intimate teacher-student relationship. The students are always in the loving and watchful eyes of their teachers which provide the students ample opportunity to solve their difficulties. Teachers always try to help the students in academic as well as in other spheres.
The Department has four full time teacher, three full time posts are lying vacant. It is not sufficient to do justice with the vast course we have to cover up.
Study of Physics encompasses all branches of science and new research opportunities are unfolding day by day. From the field of Biophysics to High Energy Physics and Nano-science there is now enormous scope of research. Besides research works, there are other job facilities for the students of Physics in educational institutions, software companies technical laboratories etc.
